Costs are rising, attendance is falling—the Highfield Festival is shutting down for financial reasons. Is there hope for a successor event?

The Highfield Festival near Leipzig will take place for the last time—for now—this summer. The organizers are pulling the plug due to excessive costs. Saxony’s largest rock and pop festival is no longer economically viable in its current form, Semmel Concerts and FKP Scorpio announced on Thursday. From August 13 to 16, Highfield on Lake Störmthal will therefore host “One Last Dance.”

Costs are rising, attendance is falling

“It’s no longer a secret that organizing festivals is becoming increasingly expensive due to a whole range of factors, while demand is falling because of the rising cost of living—as evidenced by the steadily growing number of festivals being canceled,” the organizers explained. Compared to the pre-COVID era, costs for staff, materials, performance fees, and energy have risen by about 45 percent. “Highfield, as its fans know and love it, is no longer viable in this form.”

Semmel Concerts and FKP Scorpio left open the possibility of another event taking place at Störmthaler See in the future. For now, a “creative break” is planned for 2027. The time will be used to develop a new concept.

Since 2010, Highfield has been held on a peninsula on the flooded open-pit lake in the small municipality of Großpösna near Leipzig. Prior to that, the Hohenfelden Reservoir near Erfurt had been the festival’s home for twelve years. Following controversy over litter and vandalism, it moved from Thuringia to Saxony. According to reports, attendance rose from 25,000 to as many as 35,000 at its peak.

Ferris wheel fire two years ago

Two years ago, a fire on a Ferris wheel cast a shadow over Highfield: Two gondolas burned to the ground, and 16 people were injured, some of them seriously. The investigations into negligent bodily injury and negligent arson are still ongoing.

The municipality of Großpösna reacted with regret to the departure of Highfield. “For us in Großpösna, the world isn’t coming to an end because of this understandable decision by the organizers, but we expressly regret it and currently view it as a great loss. However, if economic reasons argue against continuing, we must accept that,” said Mayor Daniel Strobel.

Numerous national and international bands are expected to perform at what will be the Highfield Festival’s final edition for the time being this August—including Kraftklub, 01099, the Beatsteaks, Marteria, and Feine Sahne Fischfilet.
