Saxony's Minister of Culture emphasizes the importance of museums for education and cohesion - just in time for International Museum Day with a central opening in Oelsnitz.

Saxony's Minister of Culture Barbara Klepsch (CDU) is promoting visits to the state's museums. "Museums are places of encounter, education and participation and at this special time, they are more important than ever," emphasized the minister with a view to the 49th International Museum Day this Sunday. Museums promote exchange and different perspectives and strengthen social cohesion.

Opening of Museum Day at the "KohleWelt" in Oelsnitz

This year, the central opening of International Museum Day will take place at the "KohleWelt" Oelsnitz in the Ore Mountains. The museum preserves and exhibits objects relating to coal mining in Saxony. It was reopened in January 2025 after being renovated and redesigned. It was awarded the main prize at the 10th Saxon Museum Prize. There are around 400 museums in Saxony run by various organizations.

Museum Day aims to draw attention to the relevance of museums

International Museum Day has been proclaimed annually by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) since 1977. The day aims to draw attention to the social relevance of museums worldwide. After all, museums preserve cultural heritage, impart knowledge and promote understanding, tolerance and diversity. Since 1992, the theme of the day has changed every year to reflect current social issues. This year's motto is: "Museums uniting a divided world".
