An original painting by Lucas Cranach the Elder now hangs in the historic Palassaal at Rochlitz Castle. The portrait of Duke George the Bearded offers insight into the Reformation era.

Rochlitz Castle is set to receive a famous painting on permanent loan. The original portrait by Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472–1553) depicts Duke George the Bearded (1471–1539), according to an announcement by the state-run Schlösserland organization. The painter had portrayed the duke on several occasions. The painting, on loan to Rochlitz Castle, dates from after 1537. The private lender wishes to remain anonymous, according to the announcement.

Painting to Be Featured in Exhibition on the History of the Reformation

The oil painting will be on view for the time being until the end of the season on November 1. It replaces a reproduction previously on display in the Palassaal as part of the exhibition on the history of the Reformation. “The opportunity to display the painting permanently at Rochlitz is an absolute stroke of luck and greatly enhances the permanent exhibition,” emphasized Frank Schmidt, museologist and curator of the exhibition at Rochlitz Castle.

George the Bearded was a staunch opponent of Luther

Rochlitz Castle is located on the so-called Luther Trail and has featured an exhibition on the Reformation in the region since 2015. Duke George the Bearded is considered a staunch opponent of the reformer Luther. The painting depicts the duke in a black robe, wearing the chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece and sporting a distinctive, full beard. The beard became his trademark. After the death of his wife Barbara in 1534, the prince—who until then had been clean-shaven—let his beard grow.
