Financial bottlenecks are causing growing uncertainty at the Plauen-Zwickau Theater. What consequences this will have for the coming season.

The Theater Plauen-Zwickau is under considerable financial pressure. "Costs have been rising much faster than our income for years," explains Managing Director Sandra Kaiser. A deficit of around 1.3 million euros is expected for the current year. This will have an impact on planning for the next season. The program for this will be officially presented this Tuesday (7 April).

In order to counteract the negative trend, the theater is cutting three major productions per season - one each in drama, musical theater and ballet. According to Kaiser, this has already been implemented in the current season. At the same time, the guest budget and the production budget will be reduced and positions will not be filled. Kaiser: "Further structural measures are currently being prepared."

"We urgently need adequate funding"

Despite this, the theater management does not expect to be able to cope with the deficit alone: "We urgently need adequate funding - this includes dynamic subsidies, a reformed cultural area law and finally planning security." The annual increase in the deficit is likely to be around 500,000 euros. "The reserves have been used up and next year there will no longer be enough liquidity to service all liabilities," continued Sandra Kaiser.

The main cause of the financial crisis is considered to be rising personnel costs, which account for more than 80 percent of total expenditure. Pay increases therefore have a particularly strong impact. At the same time, public subsidies have not yet been dynamized, while municipal budgets are also under pressure.
