Roland Kaiser’s open-air concerts on the banks of the Elbe have achieved cult status. Once again, the nearly 50,000 tickets sold out in no time. “Kaisermania” is a smash hit.

The Kaiser on the Königsufer: Pop singer Roland Kaiser is expected to return to Dresden for a “home game” starting tonight—even though he isn’t from Saxony and fans are traveling in from all parts of the country as well as from abroad. That’s because the 74-year-old artist has a special connection to Dresden. “I feel a particularly strong connection between my passion for music and the city of Dresden,” said Kaiser, referring to his latest concert series, “Kaisermania.”

Many fans can sing along to every line of every song

Four times, some 12,000 fans each will watch the show by the West Berlin-born singer and his band at the Filmnächte venue on the banks of the Elbe. The first two concerts will take place this Friday and Saturday, with additional performances on August 7 and 8. Kaiser has repeatedly emphasized that the fans’ enthusiasm and support mean the world to him. The Schlager singer can count on that again this year. Many fans can sing along to every line of the lyrics.

“Kaisermania” is also popular because the stage is set against the backdrop of Dresden’s Old Town. On balmy summer nights, a Mediterranean flair envelops the event. The concerts are characterized by a strong stage presence, emotionally charged moments, and a close connection with the audience. Since the beginning of “Kaisermania,” around 670,000 ticketed spectators have attended the concerts.

In addition, there are always many fans who join in the festivities near the official concert grounds—for example, on the Elbe meadows. At least there they can enjoy the master’s songs and soak up the atmosphere of the fans in front of the stage. Until 2004, the Carolabrücke also offered many onlookers a spot—essentially from the first tier. However, following the collapse and demolition of the dilapidated structure, these free spots are now a thing of the past. Only the Augustus Bridge still offers a view from the side.

All nearly 50,000 tickets were sold out within an hour

The concert promoter Semmel Concerts hit the jackpot with “Kaisermania.” This year, too, the nearly 50,000 tickets reportedly sold out within an hour. The promoter estimates that, since the premiere in 2003, well over a million people have experienced Roland Kaiser on the Königsufer from the “outlying spots” on the Elbe meadows—a superlative achievement for any artist.

Meanwhile, the Dresden Tourism Association (TVDD) hails “Kaisermania” as a major success for the industry. Such major cultural events “boost the city’s national visibility, create concrete reasons to travel here, and generate additional economic value in the hotel, restaurant, retail, transportation, and cultural and leisure sectors,” emphasized Martin Raich, deputy director of the TVDD and general manager of the Hilton Dresden.

“Kaisermania” Drives Revenue in the City

“We’re very pleased with the enormous demand. For Dresden, ‘Kaisermania’ has long been more than just a concert series. It is a flagship tourist attraction that draws visitors from all over Germany and gives the city a positive, emotional image,” said Raich. The hotel industry is clearly feeling this impact. “The first weekend is, in fact, almost fully booked, and things are looking good for the second concert weekend as well.”

The tourism association cites a study showing that “Kaisermania” in particular has a strong impact. According to the study, guests attending this concert series in 2023 generated 21.5 million euros in revenue for tourism, the restaurant industry, and retail.

“Many guests combine the concert evening with a short getaway and spend the entire weekend in Dresden. We see this directly in our booking figures for city tours, and feedback from the restaurant and retail sectors confirms this more than clearly,” reported Diana Maatz, managing director of Stadtrundfahrt Dresden GmbH.
