The Königstein Fortress is looking for GDR memories for a special exhibition to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the museum. Anecdotes, pictures and stories from the period from 1955 to 1989 are being collected, the mountain fortress announced. The museum organizers are planning an "emotional show" to show the traces the fortress has left behind in people's memories and lives. The exhibition is planned for 2027.
The fortress has been home to an open-air military history museum since 1955. According to the museum, the 34 millionth visitor is expected in June. From 1949 to 1955, the fortress also served as a youth work yard, a special home of the GDR education system. An exhibition has already been dedicated to this chapter.
Königstein Fortress towers almost 250 meters above the Elbe Valley in Saxon Switzerland. The 9.5-hectare rocky plateau is home to more than 50 buildings dating back almost 800 years.
