The World Band Championship takes place every four years in Kerkrade, the Netherlands. Ensembles from Saxony also believe they have a good chance of winning.

Brass bands from Saxony are hoping to secure top spots at the World Music Contest (WMC) in Kerkrade, the Netherlands. The Oberlichtenau Marching Band has been one of Germany’s most successful marching bands for many years. Since its first participation in 2005, the group has regularly represented Saxony on the international stage and has earned numerous gold and silver medals. This year, the band from eastern Saxony is arriving ranked fifth in the world.

The World Music Contest is considered the world championship for show bands, marching bands, and wind orchestras. Every four years, the world’s best musical ensembles gather in Kerkrade to compete against one another. The competition weekend at Limburg Stadium regularly attracts tens of thousands of visitors and is one of the most significant events on the international wind music scene.

According to the organizers, bands from about 30 countries on five continents will participate in the 20th WMC. Nearly 150 have registered for the concert competitions—about 40 percent more than at the previous edition, the organizers added. “These figures prove just how significant and large the WMC is for the global brass band scene. It’s an unparalleled institution for which musicians work with passion for years to give what may be their very best performance here,” said Björn Bus, artistic director of the event.

The Oberlichtenau marching band is accompanied by 100 local fans and is well prepared for the musical competition. “Numerous rehearsals, training camps, and an international performance in Oslo were all part of the preparation for the World Music Contest,” said club spokesperson Stefan Hähnel to the German Press Agency. In May, the musicians performed with the Royal Guard in Oslo, which is considered one of the best brass bands in the world. Oberlichtenau will perform in Kerkrade on Sunday.

The Radeberg Marching Band also aims to compete for the world championship title

The Radeberg Marching Band will perform the day before. The Radeberg band already has one success under its belt: In the Marching category, they are among the 13 highest-ranked groups competing in the so-called Championship Division for the title of “WMC World Champion,” said club spokesperson Tom Thiele. The few spots in this competitive class are highly contested.

The “Seenland Fanfaren” ensemble from Hoyerswerda can take the stage in Kerkrade with confidence: Six women from the fanfare orchestra were part of the “Fanfarenzugs Academy”—a sort of national team of German fanfare bands that won two world championship titles and a bronze medal in Mexico last weekend. In the marching showband category, they were unbeatable in the Field Parade and Freestyle March disciplines. Now the “Seenland Fanfaren” will also be performing in Kerkrade.
