There are moments in life that strike us so deeply that they not only thwart our plans, but also shake our innermost selves. For the Palais Sommer in Dresden, spring 2022 was such a moment. When the Saxon Real Estate and Construction Management (SIB) awarded the site lease to a new organizer, the end of one of the most important cultural festivals in the state capital seemed sealed. But what at first glance looked like a defeat ultimately turned out to be a turning point and an opportunity for an impressive new beginning.
Within a very short time, the team created a new vision for the Palais Sommer, which became reality at three different locations in Dresden. The result was astounding: the festival's visitor numbers rose to an overwhelming 187,000 - more than double the previous year. With these numbers, Palais Sommer not only set an example for its own resilience, but also for the city of Dresden's vibrant cultural scene.
The Palais Sommer's three new locations also brought expanded access to different audiences. This change has not only allowed Palais Sommer to survive, but to truly flourish. "Palais Sommer has evolved in every way at the new locations. Now we feel like continuing on this path," explained Jörg Polenz.
