After a fire and decades of standing vacant, the Seifhennersdorf train station seemed doomed to decay. Now the historic building is receiving emergency repairs.

The German Foundation for Monument Protection (DSD) is providing 50,000 euros in emergency aid for the Seifhennersdorf train station. The funds are intended to secure the roof of the station building. The building dates back to the 1870s and was expanded in 1910. During the heyday of the textile industry, around 4,000 workers arrived and departed from here daily, according to the DSD. Train service to Zittau and Eibau continued until the 1990s.

The vacant station building fell into disrepair at a rapid pace

After German reunification, the station was sold to private investors who neither carried out maintenance nor fulfilled their safety obligations, according to reports. “During the 20 years it stood vacant, the building sustained increasing damage due to vandalism. In the summer of 2023, this damage worsened as a result of arson in the central section of the station. No emergency safety measures were taken.” Consequently, urgent action was recently needed to prevent the building’s complete collapse.

Citizens’ Initiative Aims to Save the Station Building

The dilapidated station building can also count on civic engagement. The “Bahnhof Seifhennersdorf” citizens’ initiative aims to facilitate the rescue, renovation, and revitalization of the historic station and create a vibrant social hub.

DSD has already supported more than 880 historic sites in Saxony

According to the foundation, the Seifhennersdorf train station is one of more than 880 historic sites that DSD has been able to support thanks to private donations, trust foundations, and funds from the GlücksSpirale lottery has been able to support in Saxony alone.
