Saxony’s Interior Minister Armin Schuster has described the drone alert at Leipzig/Halle Airport as a “very serious security incident.” State and federal security authorities have been working together around the clock since last night, the CDU politician explained. Among others, the Joint Center for Countering Hybrid Threats and the Federal Police’s drone defense unit are involved. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. A tip line and a tip portal have been set up.
During the night, an airport employee found a drone equipped with an explosive device on the “South Runway.” A second, unidentified flying object is believed to have collided with a cargo plane after it took off again following the earlier closure of the runway, according to the Saxony State Criminal Police Office. The aircraft landed in Hanover with minor damage.
