Cycling on the A4: A 43-year-old man was stopped by the police and had to leave the highway in a police car. Now he’s facing a fine.

Taking a shortcut on the A4 highway by bike ended in an expensive ride in a police car for a 43-year-old man. According to the Görlitz Police Department, the Brazilian man was apparently unaware that cycling on the highway is not permitted in Germany and that he had put himself in considerable danger when he was riding on the shoulder of the highway between Kodersdorf and Görlitz on Tuesday.

Officers stopped the man and immediately transported him and his bicycle off the highway in a police car, according to a spokesperson for the police department. The man will now receive a bill for the service, the spokesperson added. He paid a fine of ten euros on the spot. He had violated Section 18 of the Road Traffic Regulations, the police spokesperson explained. According to that provision, using the highway with a non-motorized vehicle is strictly prohibited.
