New chip factories bring thousands of jobs to Dresden. The region is facing major challenges, particularly in terms of housing construction and the search for commercial space.

The Dresden Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) is calling for more speed in the development of the region in the wake of growth in the semiconductor industry. Close cooperation between the state capital and the surrounding area is necessary, said IHK President Andreas Sperl at a press conference in Dresden. The region is facing infrastructural challenges, for example in terms of energy and water supply.

Thousands of new jobs in the microchip industry will be created in the Saxon state capital in the coming years. The manufacturer Infineon, which is already based in Dresden, is currently expanding its site with another factory. The Taiwanese manufacturer TSMC is implementing another major project. The German government also recently approved the start of another billion-euro investment project by Globalfoundries.

Sperl also emphasized the high demand for housing and commercial space. "However, we have not yet seen much of a housing boom," he said. A fast lane needs to be set up here in order to keep pace with the rapid developments in the semiconductor industry. Sperl called for a softening of regulations for the tendering of building land, for example. He also appealed to local authorities to open up to new companies and release commercial space.

With a view to the semiconductor industry, he called for the rigid regulations to be adapted more quickly. Although the Free State of Bavaria has introduced reforms, their implementation is not planned until 2029 at the earliest - too late in the Chamber's view.
