Saxony aims to play a leading role in the expansion of hydrogen infrastructure in eastern Germany. Here’s how the Free State plans to move from strategy to implementation.

Saxony aims to play a key role in the expansion of hydrogen infrastructure in eastern Germany. By 2030, the Free State aims to establish a hydrogen economy along the entire value chain—from production to transport to consumption, said Sebastian Scheel, State Secretary at the Ministry of Economic Affairs, according to a statement issued on the sidelines of the East German Hydrogen Congress in Dresden. “To this end, we are creating reliable framework conditions, facilitating infrastructure, and supporting innovation and investment.”

Scheel thus called for close cooperation among the states. “After years of strategies, funding programs, and planning, it now comes down to the decisive step: moving from strategy to implementation and from a future-oriented topic to a functioning market,” he said.

Several Successful Hydrogen Projects in Saxony

According to the ministry, there are already several success stories in Saxony. The Dresden-based company Sunfire, for example, has demonstrated—with the unveiling of a new 50-megawatt electrolysis system—that hydrogen technologies are being developed and industrialized in Saxony for the international market.

With the Hydrogen Innovation Center (HIC) in Chemnitz, startups and small and medium-sized enterprises also have the opportunity to develop and test hydrogen technologies under real-world conditions. Preparations are also underway in Chemnitz to connect to the future nationwide hydrogen network.
