Saxony is pushing ahead with the use of autonomous vehicles in local public transport. Tests are to be completed by 2030 and such shuttles are to go into regular operation in this country, explained Transport Minister Regina Kraushaar (CDU) at a symposium in Dresden. In order to achieve this, 19 partners have signed a declaration of intent. These include transport and development companies, local authorities, ministries, research institutions and industry associations.
The aim is to bring highly automated local transport vehicles - level 4 of 5 - into regular operation by 2030. The whole thing is to be expanded in the following years and also extended to freight transport, it was said. The declaration of intent is intended to improve cooperation between those involved in order to put innovations into practice more quickly. The aim is to create new, flexible services and make public transport more attractive and efficient, particularly in the areas surrounding cities and in rural areas.
