Starting Monday, all traffic on Highway 14 will be routed over a temporary bridge across the Mulde River near Grimma. The highway will remain four lanes wide, but drivers should expect narrowed lanes to the width of the construction zone, according to the highway construction company Deges.
Diverting traffic onto the newly constructed temporary bridge is a prerequisite for the demolition of the old Mulde Bridge. It dates back to the early 1970s and has been severely damaged due to increasing traffic—particularly from heavy trucks—as well as flooding.
Demolition of the old bridge is now set to begin soon. According to Deges, a second new half of the bridge will be built afterward. Based on current plans, the new Mulde Bridge is scheduled to be completed between late 2028 and early 2029. The total cost amounts to approximately 80 million euros and will be covered by the federal government.
