Contrary to the nationwide trend, Saxony’s economic output declined slightly in the first half of the year. Compared to the same period last year, the price-adjusted gross domestic product fell by 0.3 percent, according to the State Statistical Office in Kamenz. As a result, economic performance in the Free State of Saxony was significantly worse than the German average, which saw an increase of 0.9 percent. The range extended from a 1.8 percent increase in price-adjusted gross domestic product in Hesse to a 0.8 percent decline in Thuringia. With Saxony, Thuringia, and Saarland, only three federal states recorded a decline. The reason for the decline in Saxony was above-average losses in gross value added in both the manufacturing and construction sectors. By contrast, growth was driven by the service sectors.
