River Closed Near Mulde Bridge — Demolition Begins

The Mulde River was closed to public use this morning in the area of the highway bridge near Grimma. This closure will remain in effect until mid-December and extends 300 meters in both directions from the bridge, according to the highway construction company Deges. Accordingly, it is not permitted to navigate the closed section of the river with watercraft.

Deges cited demolition work on the old Mulde Bridge as the reason for the measure; according to a spokesperson, this work has now begun. The Mulde River is being closed at this location to ensure an adequate safety zone around the bridge. 

Section Remains Four-Lane Despite Temporary Bridge

On Highway 14 near Grimma, traffic heading toward Dresden has been using a temporary bridge over the Mulde River since early August. Last Thursday, the lane heading toward Leipzig also opened to traffic. According to Deges, the route will remain four-lane. However, drivers should expect lanes narrowed to the width of the construction zone.

Mulde Bridge Expected to Be Completed by Early 2029

According to current plans, the new Mulde Bridge is expected to be completed between late 2028 and early 2029. The total cost is approximately 80 million euros and will be covered by the federal government.

The Mulde Bridge dates back to the early 1970s and has been severely damaged due to increasing traffic—particularly from heavy trucks—and flooding.
