A drone loaded with explosives was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport. Investigators are still looking into the incident.

One day after an explosive-laden drone was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport, the investigation is ongoing. The search for a second unidentified object is set to continue in the early morning hours, said a spokesperson for the Saxony State Criminal Police Office (LKA).

The drone carrying the explosive device was discovered early Wednesday morning on the “South Runway” at Leipzig/Halle Airport. According to security sources, it was located near a Ukrainian Antonov AN-124 Condor transport aircraft. Specialists from the Federal Police defused the explosive device.

A suspected second unidentified flying object reportedly collided with a cargo plane after the aircraft had taken off again following the earlier closure of the runway. Minor damage was reportedly found on the aircraft after it landed in Hanover. Saxony’s Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) said that the search for parts of a possible second drone is still ongoing.

Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) had spoken on Wednesday evening of a “new level of threat” and a “hybrid attack scenario.”
