"Germany's Largest Battery Storage Facility" Launches Near Leuna

Storing electricity when there is plenty of it and feeding it back into the grid later: A new large-scale storage facility near Leuna is intended to relieve pressure on the power grid. Saxony-Anhalt is increasingly relying on such facilities.

Storing excess electricity from wind and solar power plants and feeding it back into the grid as needed: A large battery storage facility has been officially inaugurated near Leuna. The Upper Franconian company Münch Energie commissioned the storage network near Leuna/Krumpa together with Saxony-Anhalt’s Minister President Sven Schulze (CDU).

The facility has a capacity of 250 megawatts and can currently store around 500 megawatt-hours of electricity. Storage capacity is set to increase to 800 megawatt-hours before the end of this year. According to Münch Energie, this is the largest battery storage network currently in operation in Germany.

Storing surplus electricity for later use

Battery storage systems can balance out fluctuations in renewable energy: The new storage facility absorbs excess wind and solar power and makes it available again later when demand rises. This is intended to relieve the strain on the power grids and reduce the need to curtail renewable energy plants.

“Large-scale storage systems are the key to this flexibility,” said Schulze. Saxony-Anhalt already generates large amounts of electricity from solar and wind power. With storage, this energy can be made available more readily when it is needed. “This strengthens the security of supply and makes our power grid more stable.”

The storage network consists of five sub-facilities and is connected to several specially constructed substations. According to Münch Energie, construction took about six months. The project was financed entirely by the private sector and without government subsidies.

The region has a long history in the energy sector. Lignite has been mined in the Leipzig area for more than a century; many former open-pit mines have since been shut down and flooded. Company founder Mario Münch described the development of new energy infrastructure as a “very wise continuation of that history.”

Energy Supply as a Location Factor

Münch views energy infrastructure as a key factor in economic development. “Investments flow to places where electricity is affordable, reliable, and green,” said Münch. The goal is to develop the Leipzig/Halle region into a hub for long-term growth.

Schulze expressed confidence that Saxony-Anhalt could rank among the top third of German states in terms of economic strength over the next 10 to 20 years. Companies invest where they can obtain reliable energy at reasonable prices.

Additional large-scale battery storage facilities are being built in Saxony-Anhalt. A 300-megawatt facility is planned in Förderstedt, which is scheduled to be fully operational by 2027. In Wittenberg, a battery park with a capacity of 60 megawatts and 190 megawatt-hours of storage capacity is scheduled to go into operation in 2028.
