Schools in Saxony have resumed classes—with fewer first-graders than last school year.

The new school year has begun for Saxony’s students following the summer break. On Monday, Minister of Education Conrad Clemens (CDU) visited the elementary school in Herwigsdorf in Upper Lusatia, where he handed out goody bags to the first-graders.

According to the ministry, the number of first-graders has declined: it fell from 38,388 last year to 37,770 this school year.

A total of 527,300 students are attending schools in Saxony this school year (previous year: 527,192). The number of students in public schools fell to about 439,900 (previous year: 440,394). In contrast, the number of students at independent schools rose from 86,798 to about 87,400.
