Bank balances, securities or real estate: fewer assets are being inherited in Saxony. Who benefits from the millions of euros from inheritances?

The trend towards fewer inheritances continued last year. According to the State Statistical Office, 609 million euros were left behind last year. This compares to 620 million euros in the previous year and around 624 million euros in 2023. In most cases last year, these were bank deposits (37 percent). Securities accounted for 22 percent and real estate for 27 percent. The Saxon tax authorities assessed around 75.4 million euros as taxes on inheritances and gifts.

According to the State Statistical Office, taxes from inheritances and gifts only benefit the state budget. However, most inheritances and gifts are tax-free due to high allowances and are not recorded in the inheritance and gift tax statistics.
