The investigation into the drone incident is being handled by Saxony

The investigation into the nighttime drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport is now being conducted solely by Saxony authorities. “The Federal Police have completed their work. Now it’s our forensic technicians’ turn,” said Leipzig police spokesperson Olaf Hoppe. The investigation is being conducted by colleagues from the Leipzig Police Department and the Saxony State Criminal Police Office.

Sighting of a flying object and discovery of an object on the ground

According to Hoppe, an unidentified flying object was sighted at the airport shortly before midnight. Authorities reacted immediately and had to restrict flight operations. Almost simultaneously, an object was found on the airport’s south runway that has not yet been identified. The police spokesperson did not provide further details. He also left open whether the object was found near a Ukrainian cargo plane.

According to information from security sources, there was talk this morning of a drone that was allegedly equipped with explosives and a detonator. "Bild" was the first to report on the incident.

According to Hoppe, drones are frequently spotted at the airport north of Leipzig. Sometimes they cannot be identified. “At the moment, we actually don’t know what kind of object it was. So now we need to find out what this object was and whether it’s connected to the object we found on the ground.”

The spokesperson clarified that unauthorized persons cannot simply access the tarmac. It seems likely that the object in question fell to the ground from the air.
