According to the company, Globalfoundries’ semiconductor plant in Dresden is set to expand beyond the current expansion project. A spokesperson said the company is planning further investments. The current expansion is thus the first phase of a long-term vision for the site. The spokesperson did not confirm a report in the *Handelsblatt* regarding a planned expansion starting in 2028 with a total investment of 1.5 billion euros. These are not concrete plans, the spokesperson said. The vision could change depending on market developments. A week ago, the microchip manufacturer in Dresden celebrated the topping-out ceremony for its current “Sprint” expansion project. An additional 5,000 square meters will be added to the current 60,000 square meters of cleanroom and laboratory space. The total investment amounts to 1.1 billion euros; 495 million euros in funding for the expansion is coming through the European Chips Act. With the production expansions currently underway at Globalfoundries, the opening of an additional Infineon factory, and the establishment of Taiwanese industry giant TSMC in Dresden, “Silicon Saxony”—Europe’s largest microelectronics hub according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs—continues to grow significantly. The regional network consists of approximately 3,600 companies with over 80,000 employees. The number of employees is expected to grow to around 100,000 by 2040. Copyright 2026, dpa (www.dpa.de).
