From today, the Agra Bridge south of Leipzig will undergo a more detailed inspection. The structure from the 1970s is made of Hennigsdorf prestressing steel, the same material that was used for the collapsed Carola Bridge in Dresden. According to the State Office for Road Construction and Transport, the investigation is intended to show the condition of the bridge structure.
Drivers will have to be prepared for disruptions. Instead of two lanes, only one lane will be available in each direction. The work is expected to take ten days.
There have been discussions about the prestressed concrete bridge over which the Bundesstraße 2 runs for many years. It is considered dilapidated. It has long been restricted to a speed limit of 60 km/h. At the same time, it is a bottleneck for traffic entering Leipzig from the south.
According to the state office, the road surface is being opened up in five places on the bridge in order to expose the underlying concrete above the supports. Samples of the tendons, mortar and concrete will be examined in the laboratory. The results are expected by the end of the year.
