Old Mulde Bridge Set for Demolition—Traffic to Use Temporary Replacement Bridge

A crucial intermediate step is about to take place in the construction of the new Mulde Bridge on Highway 14 near Grimma. Starting next Monday morning, all highway traffic will be rerouted over a new temporary structure. According to the highway construction company Deges, demolition of the old, dilapidated bridge will begin shortly thereafter.

The replacement structure has been erected next to the existing bridge. It rests on temporary piers that will be demolished later. The roadway, however, will remain in use and, upon completion, will become the lane heading toward Nossen. For the time being, all traffic will flow across this section on four lanes, spanning the width of the construction site. 

Completion by 2028/2029

Once the old bridge has been demolished, Deges says a second half of the bridge will be built—this time on the permanent piers of the new bridge. This will later become the lane heading toward Leipzig. According to current plans, the new bridge over the Mulde River is scheduled to be completed between late 2028 and early 2029. 

The old Mulde Bridge dates back to the early 1970s and has been severely damaged due to increasing traffic—particularly from heavy trucks—as well as flooding. Construction of the new 361-meter-long structure began in October 2022. The total cost amounts to approximately 80 million euros and is being covered by the federal government.
