Through the “Sachsenfonds,” the Free State also plans to invest in its infrastructure. Here’s what’s planned and how the funds will be allocated.

Saxony plans to invest approximately 50 million euros from the “Saxony Fund” in roads and sustainable mobility. The cabinet approved the allocation of these funds from the federal government’s special fund for the fiscal years 2025 and 2026. According to the information provided, 26 million euros are earmarked for the maintenance of state highways, while 24 million euros are to be allocated in equal parts to public transit, bicycle infrastructure, and rail infrastructure.

This will benefit the people of the Free State, said Infrastructure Minister Regina Kraushaar. “Through the long-overdue renovation of roads, safe bike paths, and a further push toward strong rail connections. Better conditions for people and the economy—that is special fund money well spent,” said the CDU politician.

With regard to roads, the focus includes the maintenance and expansion of roadways, intersections, bridges, and tunnels, as well as the necessary planning and engineering services. Many of the projects have been in the planning stages for some time but could not be started until now due to a lack of budgetary funds, officials said.

In the area of public transit, projects by Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe are being funded—including initiatives focused on accessibility and climate-friendly mobility. Eight million euros have also been allocated for bicycle infrastructure. According to the information provided, the funds are intended to close gaps in the network, improve routes to schools and for commuters, and better connect bike paths to public transit. Funds are also being allocated, among other things, to further planning for the electrification and expansion of the Dresden-Görlitz rail line.

The so-called “Saxony Fund” pools the funds that the Free State of Saxony receives from the federal government’s special fund “Infrastructure and Climate Neutrality.” A total of 4.8 billion euros is earmarked for Saxony over a period of twelve years. Of this amount, just under 2 billion euros are available through the “state arm” for projects undertaken by the Free State.
