Rising motorcycle star Fynn Kratochwil underscores his ambitions, while German fans hope for an end to the World Championship drought. What the ADAC and DMSB are doing to support young talent.

For the past three years, no German rider has competed on a full-time basis in the Motorcycle World Championship. Now, of all places, at the Sachsenring, hopes are rising that this dry spell will come to an end. Fynn Kratochwil is considered one of Germany’s greatest talents—by former riders, sponsors such as the Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club (ADAC), and many German fans.

261,831 fans came to the Sachsenring this race weekend—more than ever before. Among them was Lothar Matthäus, Germany’s all-time leading soccer national team player, who waved the checkered flag in the MotoGP class. Sachsenring specialist Marc Márquez was once again unbeatable. The Spaniard triumphed for the tenth time, cementing his reputation as the “King of the Ring.” Fittingly, he celebrated his victory with an inflatable crown. The attendance figure set yet another record, even without a top-tier German star to draw the crowds.

That could change, however—thanks to Kratochwil. After winning the Northern Talent Cup title, the 15-year-old is now competing in the Red Bull Rookies Cup and, on his home track in front of his family and many German fans, secured his first pole position in what is arguably the most important series on the path to the World Championship. In the races, he finished fourth on Saturday and third on Sunday. Sunday’s race was abandoned due to a crash. “This feels like a victory here. Thank you, Saxony,” said Kratochwil.

The most recent regular rider was Lukas Tulovic, who had to step down after the 2023 season. Jonas Folger did step in temporarily to replace the injured Maverick Viñales at KTM. Otherwise, however, there has been a drought of riders recently.

The ADAC has been aware of these problems for years and is working together with the German Motor Sport Federation to develop more German riders again. Kratochwil in the Rookies Cup, as well as Anina Urlaß and perennial winner Robin Siegert in the Moto4 Northern Cup, are benefiting from support through the national squad, known as Motorsport Team Germany.

Talents from the foundation “are doing a great job”

“Our riders from the foundation are doing a great job. We couldn’t have expected this three or four years ago. The work has been significantly stepped up,” said Dieter Seibert, ADAC Chairman of the Sports Foundation.

Tulovic, who has competed in two full seasons of the Moto2 World Championship, also recognizes a positive trend. “I hope things continue this way, and it’s very realistic that in a few years we’ll see one or two German talents in the World Championship.”

Kratochwil confirmed his status as the biggest hope for the future. At the Sachsenring, the Thuringian moved up in the overall standings of the Rookies Cup, which has been won in the past by riders including Jorge Martín, Pedro Acosta, and Johann Zarco. They’ve made the leap to the premier class—Martín can even call himself a MotoGP World Champion.

Kratochwil Aims for World Championship Promotion

Kratochwil wants to follow in their footsteps. His medium-term goal is the Moto3 World Championship. However, due to the age rule, as a minor, he would have to finish among the top three in the Red Bull Rookies Cup in the 2027 season to be eligible to compete as early as 2028. While the Sachsenring will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year and remain on the World Championship calendar until at least 2031, German fans will have to be patient a little longer.

“We all share this goal. But we have to temper expectations that it will happen tomorrow,” said Thomas Voss. He explained that the rights holder, MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group, also has an interest in having a German regular rider. As Head of Motorsports, Classic Cars, and Events at the ADAC, Voss is primarily hoping for continuity in the junior program and a higher level of competition. “We’re in the process of developing that, and we’ve managed to get everyone pulling in the same direction now.”

Kratochwil is still a long way from the MotoGP class. At the Sachsenring, however, he showed for the first time why many see him specifically as the candidate to end Germany’s dry spell. “Things are looking up,” said Tulovic about the next generation of German motorcycle racers.
