Economic researchers wanted to know how German citizens rate the performance of their schools. Only a few federal states rate their educational institutions better than Saxony.

People in Saxony are quite satisfied with their schools. According to the Ifo Education Barometer, they gave schools in the state an average score of 2.94, putting them in third place in a nationwide comparison. Only people in Bavaria (2.77) and Hamburg (2.92) gave better ratings. At the bottom are Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt (3.17 each) and at the bottom Bremen with 3.50.

The Ifo Institute surveyed around 9,700 people in Germany from April to June. The samples are also representative at federal state level. According to the survey, respondents agreed that "state spending on schools should increase": In Saxony, 79 percent thought this was the case.

The opinion pattern is roughly in line with studies on the education sector. According to an annual comparative study by the employer-affiliated Initiative Neue Soziale Marktwirtschaft (INSM), which was published at the end of August, Saxony continues to have the best education system in Germany. In the INSM education monitor, which uses 98 indicators to examine the education systems of the federal states, Saxony is followed by Bavaria, ahead of Hamburg and Thuringia. At the bottom of the scale is Bremen.
