The situation on the Dresden housing market is tight. This also applies to places in student residences. A new hall of residence should bring relief.

There are still not enough places in Dresden's student residences. More than 1,000 applicants were turned down at the start of the semester, as announced by Studentenwerk Dresden. Of the 5,526 places in halls of residence at the Dresden and Tharandt campuses, 1,843 were newly allocated. However, as in the previous year, demand exceeded supply many times over.

According to the information, 45 percent of all applicants came from abroad. It is particularly difficult to find accommodation from there. "The availability of student accommodation at affordable prices is therefore a key factor for successful university development," emphasized Managing Director Michael Rollberg. Unfortunately, the positive impetus provided by the federal and state "Young Housing" program has not yet been sufficient.

Dresden Student Services has 32 halls of residence under its management. The rent is between 173 euros and 455 euros, depending on the renovation status and size. This means that some of the rents are already well above the Bafög flat-rate housing allowance of 380 euros. 502 places are considered to be in urgent need of refurbishment. The refurbishment of a home with 213 places is due to be completed in spring 2025. A new building with 149 places is also planned.
