Saxony is considering opening its own liaison office in Israel. The cabinet is receptive to the idea, reported Thomas Feist, the state government’s commissioner for Jewish life in Saxony, following the cabinet meeting in Dresden. Discussions have already been held with North Rhine-Westphalia to determine whether Saxony could join its liaison office. Feist estimated the annual costs at approximately 200,000 euros. 

Cooperation in the Field of Science

According to Feist, a liaison office could be particularly important with regard to cooperation in the field of science. He noted that Israel has an excellent educational landscape. “Israel is a high-tech nation.”

Feist presented her annual report for 2025 to the cabinet on Tuesday. The report takes stock of Jewish life in society and related activities and measures. The report also includes an overview of current manifestations of antisemitism and strategies for prevention.

Jewish life is a natural part of Saxony

“Saxony is sending a clear message. Jewish life is a natural part of our Free State. The report documents important progress in promoting Jewish culture and protecting against antisemitism, while also highlighting the areas where our joint commitment must be further strengthened,” Feist emphasized.

Minister of Culture Concerned About High Number of Antisemitic Crimes

Minister of Culture Conrad Clemens (CDU) expressed concern about the high number of antisemitic crimes in Saxony. The State Criminal Police Office has recorded more than 200 such offenses for the third year in a row. “This fills us with great concern and shows how important both educational efforts and consistent criminal prosecution remain.” By establishing a branch of the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial in Leipzig, Saxony is strengthening the active network of Jewish culture and educational work in the Free State.

Jewish life is safe thanks to a massive police presence

Feist was also asked how safe Jewish life is in Saxony. Thanks to a massive police presence, it is safe, the commissioner clarified. “And because, unfortunately, we are also forced to upgrade security measures at community centers, synagogues, and so on (...). That means life is safe, but the conditions are not what I would consider normal. I must also make that very clear.”
