Crises, money worries, looking for a partner: More and more women in Saxony do not see children as a permanent part of their lives. Why stable relationships are more important than a marriage certificate.

For women in Saxony, having children is no longer a natural part of planning for the future. This is the result of a study presented by the Federal Institute of Public Health (BIÖG) and the Saxon Ministry of Social Affairs. According to the study, only 57% of the women surveyed still see children as an integral part of their life plan. Twelve years ago, this was still a matter of course for 83 percent of women in Saxony.

Minister wants to create good conditions for starting a family

The reasons often given for postponing the desire to have children are worries about the current crises (31 percent), financial insecurity (30 percent) and the lack of a suitable partnership (30 percent).

"The results of the study show that women today plan their lives very individually and that children are no longer a matter of course when planning for the future," said Saxony's Minister of Social Affairs Petra Köpping. However, the SPD politician emphasized that it is important to her that young people look to the future with confidence and can imagine a life with children. "As a Free State, we will continue to offer the right conditions for starting a family."

Partnership important for starting a family, marriage not

For those surveyed, a stable partnership plays an important role in starting a family, but marriage is less important: less than half (45%) of women in Saxony are married when their first child is born. Nevertheless, partnerships lasting several years are the rule at the time of the first birth, accounting for 79 percent. Half of women (50 percent) have been in a relationship for at least five years when they have their first child.

For the study, the Freiburg Social Science Research Institute for Gender Issues surveyed 1,773 women between the ages of 20 and 44 on aspects of family planning such as the desire to have children, pregnancies, partnerships and contraception.
