The Dresden artist Holger John is facing anonymous accusations from students at the Academy of Fine Arts (HfBK). Even before his current exhibition in the university's glass dome building, there had been indications of massive attempts to disrupt the opening on April 30, he told the German Press Agency. In the past few days, a banner for the exhibition had been cut up and a gate in front of the building had been repeatedly blocked with locks. During a conversation in the rector's office, he was told that students were demanding the exhibition be closed.
Artist rejects misconduct
Drawing conclusions about his own behavior from a photo with Lindemann is outrageous, said John. He had not been guilty of anything and had never been the subject of any hostility. If there had been any misconduct on his part in the past, the university would never have invited him for an exhibition. The accusations were damaging to his reputation and business. He himself is not a mimosa, does not mind criticism at all and would be happy to answer his critics. But the actions in the context of the exhibitions went too far.
University files criminal charges against unknown persons
Rector Oliver Kossack and Chancellor Jochen Beißert say they do not know who is behind the protests. The same applies to the motive of the perpetrators. "The university has filed criminal charges against persons unknown. The HfBK Dresden has restored access to the exhibition after every intervention. Damaged items have been or will be either replaced or repaired." Further safety precautions have also been taken.
