Saxon Literature Prize for Heike Geißler

Author Heike Geißler has been awarded the 2026 Saxon Literature Prize, which comes with a cash prize of 10,000 euros. A jury appointed by the Free State’s Literary Council honored the 49-year-old as an “author who is firmly engaged with the present and with social conditions”: “Her analysis of the present is multifaceted, manifesting itself both in the personal tone of her essays and in the exuberant, fairy-tale-like, experimental format of her books,” the jury stated. She views the world through the lens of a “political philosopher.”

Geißler is known for her essays and novels. Her debut novel, *Rosa*, was published in 2002, and her protest novel, *Die Woche*, in 2022. Her novel *Michaela Kohlhaas* was recently published. The jury honors the author for more than 20 years of creative work.

Precise Analysis of Modern Society

“We are honoring an author who analyzes our everyday life and modern society with great precision. Her texts translate complex observations and social contradictions into a clear and at times humorous literary form,” said Minister of Culture Barbara Klepsch (CDU). In doing so, she encourages her audience to reflect and invites them to search together for answers to the questions of our time. 

Geißler was born in Riesa in 1977. She studied American Studies, Political Science, and Geography in Dresden, as well as Hispanic Studies and Literary Studies in Halle an der Saale. She has already received several awards for her work, including the Heinrich Böll Prize and the Bavarian Book Prize. Heike Geißler lives with her family in Leipzig, where the award will be presented this fall.
