The Hellerau Festival Theater is concerned about its future funding. Nevertheless, as the host institution, the European Center for the Arts intends to impress audiences with international dance highlights and music.

Despite strong figures, the European Center for the Arts at the Festspielhaus Hellerau faces significant financial losses next year. Since federal funding for the Alliance of International Production Houses is set to expire, the Festspielhaus announced that this alone will result in a shortfall of approximately 523,000 euros for the year 2025. For the current year, Hellerau still has remaining funds of 267,000 euros available from the previous project phase.

Furthermore, it is unclear how the state of public finances—such as those of the Free State—will affect the project funding that Hellerau relies on for its programs. The city budget has also not yet been finalized. Hellerau is an institution of the state capital. A budget freeze is currently in effect here.

While major theaters are considering a flexible scheduling model and asking themselves whether they could stage a different play every day, the situation at Hellerau is different, said Commercial Director Martin Heering: “The question is: Can we put on a performance at all?”

Head of the Cultural Affairs Office Sees Hellerau in “Troubled Waters”

David Klein, head of the Office for Culture and Historic Preservation, believes Hellerau has run into “troubled waters” regarding the financing of the upcoming season. He appealed to state, federal, and foundation funders. Hellerau can only maintain the quality of its program if it can continue to operate under financial conditions similar to those of previous years. Dresden will not be able to compensate for any shortfall in federal and state funding.

Yet the Festspielhaus can count the 2025/2026 season as a successful one. According to projections, 43,400 guests will have attended the performances by the end of the season. This corresponds to a capacity utilization rate of just under 81 percent. The center generated 380,000 euros in ticket sales.

Total revenue for the 2025 calendar year was just under 1.8 million euros; in 2026, it is expected to reach around 1.9 million euros. However, hosting the Tanzplattform Deutschland also played a significant role here, bringing in a good 413,000 euros in funding. For 2027, Hellerau expects revenues of only about one million euros.

Dance remains a focal point

Despite financial constraints, Hellerau Artistic Director Carena Schlewitt wants to offer a varied program in the coming season as well. She said during the season presentation that they hadn’t been able to list everything yet because some decisions were still pending.

Dance remains a focal point of Hellerau’s program. In the new season, fans can look forward to guest performances by renowned ensembles, including the Cloud Gate Dance Company from Taiwan and the Batsheva Dance Company from Israel. The Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company will also take the stage at the Festspielhaus. Under the slogan “Taiwan Moves,” Hellerau will showcase Taiwan’s dance and performance scene in the coming years. The partner is the chip manufacturer TSCM, which is building a new manufacturing facility in Dresden with three partners.

“Days of Contemporary Music” Turns 40

In the music section, highlights include a portrait concert by the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden dedicated to this year’s “Capell-Compositeur,” Jörg Widmann. The “Dresden Days of Contemporary Music” were already an internationally renowned event during the GDR era and will celebrate their 40th anniversary next year. The program is scheduled to be released at a later date. Starting October 7, the 3rd Hybrid Biennale will present current digital art projects for one month.
