Bundesliga soccer team VfL Wolfsburg has won the inaugural Volkswagen Cup in Zwickau. In the three-team tournament, Wolfsburg first won 2-0 against second division promoted Dynamo Dresden and then also 2-0 against the host regional league team FSV Zwickau.
The 45-minute performance against Dresden was only successful because VfL made merciless use of its two chances. First, Jonas Wind (15) headed in a fine cross from Andreas Skov Olsen unchallenged from close range. Then Dynamo goalkeeper Lennart Grill (24) scored a curious own goal. He had first made an outstanding save from a picture-book counter-attack against Vaclav Cerny. The Wolfsburg player followed up, but only hit the post. The rebounding ball hit Grill's shin and from there into the goal.
Dynamo were strong, but once again failed to make the most of their great opportunities. Jakob Lemmer (17) failed to beat VfL goalkeeper Kamil Grabara and Nils Fröling (34) missed just wide.
