The handball players of SC DHfK Leipzig have celebrated a much-needed success in the second round of the DHB Cup. Coach Raúl Alonso's team, which is still winless in the Bundesliga, won 28:26 (14:12) at league rivals Frisch Auf Göppingen to advance to the round of 16. In front of 3,500 spectators, Franz Semper was SC DHfK's best scorer with seven goals.
Leipzig struggled to get into the game and only scored its first goal from play in the seventh minute. The visitors then developed far more penetration from the backcourt and took the lead for the first time in the 27th minute through the outstanding Semper (12:11).
After the break, the Bundesliga penultimate club quickly opened up an 18:12 gap (34') with four goals in succession. However, Leipzig was not able to maintain this high level in offense for long. Göppingen fought its way back into the game and reduced the deficit to 21:23 by the 50th minute. However, the visitors held on to their narrow lead in the final spell thanks to their great commitment and a strong Domenico Ebner in goal and ultimately ran out deserved winners.
