Second division club 1. FC Magdeburg remain bottom of the table. The team from the Elbe city lost 0:1 (0:1) against SC Paderborn. Sebastian Klaas (9th) scored the only goal of the game in front of 21,654 spectators. With seven points, FCM are now four points behind the non-relegation places.
"We don't have to sugarcoat everything, but I don't think we played like a last-place team today. We were well in the game, played in first place and yes, we missed the goal again in the end," said FCM goalkeeper Dominik Reimann.
The first chance against the opponents came straight away
Coach Petrik Sander made a major shake-up to his starting XI: Six new players were on the pitch compared to the Bochum game - defensively forced, offensively partly due to Baris Atik's yellow card suspension. Magdeburg started energetically, just like against Bochum, but the visitors hit the target. After a simple long ball, the ball came to Klaas, who scored with a deflected volley.
Thus, the game continued along the familiar lines for Magdeburg - Magdeburg struggled, Paderborn could lurk on the counterattack. Magdeburg rarely got into the box and were unlucky to have a handball penalty rescinded after VAR intervention (29'). Magdeburg missed some of the chances they did create, however, with Ghrieb firing over from three meters (39').
Reimann keeps Magdeburg in the game
Immediately after the restart, Reimann kept his colors in the game, making a strong save from Nick Bätzner (47'). At the other end, Silas Gnaka (52) headed just wide of the goal. However, Paderborn became much more active than they had been for long stretches of the first half. This also restricted Magdeburg's attacking play, but they continued to press for an equalizer. However, Magdeburg remained too imprecise in the end or were blocked.
Magdeburg's core problems remain unresolved under Sander: In defense, one blunder is enough to concede a goal, in attack a multitude of chances do not lead to a goal.
