The swimming duo Lukas Märtens and Isabel Gose from SC Magdeburg and the SCM handball players are the "Sportsmen of the Year" in Saxony-Anhalt. They were chosen in equal numbers by an expert jury of representatives of the state sports association, former competitive athletes and sports journalists, as well as in an online vote. The award ceremony took place in the evening at the MDR broadcasting center in Magdeburg.
Märtens won Germany's first Olympic gold medal in the 400-metre freestyle in Paris since 1988 and gained a lot of sympathy for his home town of Magdeburg. Gose won bronze in Paris in the 1500 meter freestyle. She had already been named "Sportswoman of the Year" in Saxony-Anhalt in 2023. The SC Magdeburg handball team won the double of trophy and championship. They were also honored in 2023.
