Loud sound and cool moves: almost 900 dance enthusiasts from all over Germany gathered at the Dresden Trade Fair Center on Saturday to pursue their passion for hip-hop and show dancing. The so-called DDP Cup - by its own admission the biggest dance cup in eastern Germany - attracted 40 groups. The winners were to be crowned late in the evening.
Synchrony, charisma and originality are assessed
The dance competition is regarded as the official start of the season for the scene. It allows all enthusiasts to show off their skills in six categories of hip hop and show dance - in the kids, teens and adult age groups. According to the organizers, hip-hop is and will always be the king category of the Cup.
Here, the various dancers are judged on synchronization, charisma, harmony and originality of the dance, among other things. The size of the respective group is up to them, but three dancers is the minimum number.
Super atmosphere at the Dresden trade fair
"Watching the children dance is simply heart-warming," said organizer Dörte Freitag to the German Press Agency. The atmosphere is simply great. "It's important to help marginal sports get more exposure - not many people know that Dresden is home to multiple hip-hop world champions," emphasized Jan Klemmer, sponsorship officer at Ostsächsische Sparkasse Dresden, which supports the spectacle.
The Cup goes back to the "DDProject" association, which was founded 30 years ago in Hoyerswerda and organized the first Cup just a few years later.
