Regional league soccer team SpVgg Unterhaching will not take part in any potential promotion matches to the third division. This was announced on Tuesday by the club, which would have been promoted according to the current standings. All relevant criteria had been weighed up, it said.
"We have to be realistic and realize that the economic conditions for promotion are not in place," explained president Manfred Schwabl. The 60-year-old went on to say that this would naturally be a disappointment for the team, the coaching team and the fans after their strong performance this season. "But we won't lose sight of the prospect of promotion to League 3 in the coming years," said Schwabl.
With three matchdays remaining, the team coached by ex-Dortmund player Sven Bender is two points behind the league leaders, the U23s of 1. FC Nürnberg. Since Nuremberg's second team has not registered for the third division, the runner-up would be entitled to participate. This is currently Unterhaching, two points behind and one game ahead of Nuremberg II (69). Würzburger Kickers, who are in third place with 66 points, could now benefit from Haching's withdrawal and can move up into the matches against the champions of the Regionalliga Nordost.
