Former Bundesliga professional Chris Löwe is ending his soccer career with immediate effect. The 34-year-old announced this decision to his current club Chemnitzer FC. "But my body simply won't allow me to return to my old strength," the veteran was quoted as saying in a CFC statement on Friday. Löwe is to be officially sent off on Easter Sunday (14:00) before the game against FSV Zwickau.
The defender played his last game on 7 May last year, suffering a torn medial ligament in his knee at FC Carl Zeiss Jena. The 2012 double winner toiled in vain for a comeback.
In the summer of 2011, Löwe moved from his youth club Chemnitz to Dortmund. There he made seven Bundesliga appearances and played once in the Champions League. At the end of his first season, BVB won the championship and the DFB Cup. Löwe was not in the squad for the final in Berlin. After two years in Dortmund, he joined 1. FC Kaiserslautern and moved on to Huddersfield Town in the summer of 2019.
A year later, Löwe was surprisingly promoted to the Premier League with the club from Yorkshire. He played 52 games in the strongest league in the world before moving back to Chemnitz via Dynamo Dresden. In total, the full-back has played over 400 professional games.
