Saxony will register significantly less immigration from abroad in 2023. The slump in migration from Ukraine is particularly noticeable in the statistics.

The immigration of people from abroad in Saxony fell in 2023 compared to the previous year. According to the State Statistical Office in Kamenz, the so-called migration gains fell by more than half.

A total of 76,005 people moved to the Free State from abroad. At the same time, 41,239 people left Saxony for other countries. In the previous year, migration gains of 73,577 people were registered. According to the State Statistical Office, the decline in net immigration is primarily due to the significant drop in migration gains from Ukraine, which fell by 82 percent.

The influence of external social events such as wars and crises on migration movements can also be seen in a long-term comparison: while Saxony has mainly recorded immigration gains from Ukraine, Syria, Venezuela and Afghanistan in the last three years, gains from Poland, the Russian Federation, Romania and China still dominated between 2011 and 2013.
