Life expectancy in Saxony has risen slightly and has almost returned to pre-coronavirus pandemic levels. According to the State Statistical Office in Kamenz, a newborn girl has an average of 84.0 years ahead of her, a boy 78.0 years. Compared to 2021/2023, life expectancy increased by 0.6 years for boys and 0.4 years for girls.
The difference in the life expectancy of newborn boys and girls was exactly six years according to the 2022/2024 mortality table. This means that the difference between the sexes, which had risen to 6.2 years during the pandemic years 2020 to 2022, has decreased again.
Nationwide, the average life expectancy at birth in 2024 was 83.5 years for women and 78.9 years for men.
According to the statisticians, in addition to a decline in infant mortality, the decrease in mortality in the older age groups is also responsible for the increase in life expectancy.
