Saxony's food banks can now submit applications for the 400,000 euros in funding. The funds can be used for investments, for example in logistics or occupational health and safety, the Ministry of Social Affairs announced. "I am delighted that we will once again be able to support the important work of the food banks in 2025 despite the tight budget situation," said Social Affairs Minister Petra Köpping (SPD). The food banks bring together two important concerns by counteracting food waste and distributing it to people in need.
Between 2,500 euros and a maximum of 30,000 euros can be approved for individual projects. The Sächsische Aufbaubank is accepting project applications until October 9.
The government had initially earmarked around 40,000 euros for the food banks in the 202/2026 double budget for this year. Following criticism of the plans - including from the opposition - the amount for this year and next year was adjusted to 400,000 euros each.
In Saxony, 45 food banks operate around 110 stationary and mobile food distribution points. According to the state association, they serve around 200,000 people in need every year. Around 900 volunteers help to collect, sort and distribute the food.
