Affordable housing is in short supply, especially in large cities. Thousands of people seek help from Diakonie.

Diaconia Saxony is calling for more effective measures to combat homelessness. Last year, 3,439 people in the Free State sought support from Diakonie services, a figure that has remained at a high level for years, according to Diakonie. Around half of those seeking advice were at risk of homelessness, while the other half were living in emergency accommodation, on the street or temporarily with acquaintances.

"The figures are alarming. Housing shortages are no longer a marginal phenomenon, but affect people in all walks of life - from young to old," said Dietrich Bauer, CEO of Diakonie Sachsen. There is an urgent need for the construction and renovation of social housing in Saxony, he continued. In addition, the increase in rents must be effectively limited. Affordable housing is in short supply, especially in large cities.
