In the eastern German federal states, people are particularly attached to their place of residence. Over three quarters of people feel a particularly strong connection to their own town or village, according to a recent survey on regional identity and solidarity conducted by the opinion research institute YouGov.
Across the country, people in Hamburg rated their sense of belonging highest at 82 percent. In Saarland, the sense of belonging was lowest at 62 percent. In Saxony, 76% of people said they felt a particularly strong sense of belonging to their place of residence.
Attachment to Europe below the national average
At 53%, attachment to Europe in Saxony is well below the national average of 60%. According to the survey, 62% of respondents feel a strong or very strong connection with Germany. This is the lowest figure of all 16 federal states.
For the survey, 2,200 people were questioned online from June 27 to July 9. According to YouGov, the survey was broken down by age, gender and region and the results were then weighted accordingly. The results are representative of the resident population in Germany aged 18 and over.
