The new Carola Bridge is due to be completed by 2031. The Saxon state capital is now looking for four planning offices to draw up designs for the new bridge.

The search for planning offices for the reconstruction of Dresden's Carola Bridge has officially begun. The city's Central Procurement Office has published the tender documents for the preparation of designs for the planned new construction, according to a statement. Planning offices have until 6 October to submit bids and the contract will be awarded in December.

According to a resolution passed by the city council, the plan is for four offices to be awarded a contract and develop designs simultaneously by the end of May 2026. This should make it possible to directly compare different planning approaches. It is planned that the city community will have a say in the submissions. The final decision on the commission lies with the city council.

New construction to be completed by 2031

According to the city administration, the new construction of the Carola Bridge in Dresden is scheduled for completion in 2031 and could begin in the second quarter of 2028. This summer, the city council decided to build a four-lane replacement for the bridge, which partially collapsed last year.

One of the three strands of the Carola Bridge collapsed unexpectedly on the night of 11 September 2024 over a length of around 100 meters. There were no injuries. Following the demolition of the reinforced concrete structure, remaining work will be carried out on both sides of the Elbe until mid-September.
