Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster is considering turning back migrants who have already applied for asylum in another EU country at the border. "If we are heading for arrivals like last year or more, then I would call on the federal government to make use of paragraph 18, section 2 of the Asylum Act. This means rejections based on the third country regulation," said the CDU politician in the podcast "Table.Today".
The corresponding passage in the Asylum Act states that a foreigner must be refused entry if there are indications that another EU country is responsible for carrying out an asylum procedure.
The CDU has laid down a third country solution in its new policy statement on migration policy. According to this, anyone who applies for asylum in Europe should be transferred to a so-called safe third country and undergo a procedure there. The plan is for the participating countries to accept a quota of people in need of protection from abroad each year following the successful introduction of the third country concept.
