Saxony's Interior Minister warns: SPD plans for the right to stay could shake citizens' confidence in migration policy.

Saxon Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) does not believe in SPD proposals for a comprehensive right of residence for migrants. In a draft resolution for its parliamentary group meeting in Berlin, the SPD in the Bundestag proposed granting the right to stay to all people who are working or being trained here and are well integrated.

This goes far too far for Schuster. "Anyone who now demands new and almost unconditional residence permits is jeopardizing the growing trust of the population in our ability to control and limit migration," he told the German Press Agency in Dresden.

Schuster had only recently expressed his satisfaction that the number of voluntary departures of rejected asylum seekers had increased in Saxony last year. This is "the most acceptable form of return for everyone involved", he said. He also expects returns for citizens of Syria and Afghanistan soon.
