Fewer births, more deaths: Dresden is experiencing a growing birth deficit. What this means for the population of the state capital.

The population of Dresden fell last year. As of December 31, 2025, 571,510 people had their main residence in the state capital. This was 2,138 or 0.4 percent fewer than in the previous year, the city announced. The reason for this was a high birth deficit.

In 2025, 3,890 children were born in Dresden - fewer than in previous years. 5,881 people died, 65 more than in 2024, resulting in a birth deficit of 1,991 people. This figure was higher in 2025 than in 2024 (1,710) and 2023 (1,764).

In contrast, net migration remained balanced. At 29,000 people, roughly the same number moved to Dresden as left the state capital.

The gender distribution was also balanced. 49.8 percent of the people registered in Dresden were male, 50.2 percent female. In addition, 140 people were entered in the register as "diverse" or "not specified".
